[30-04-2020 at 1:40 p.m.] RMWB and the Canadian Red Cross announce partnership to support evacuees

(Fort McMurray, AB – April 30, 2020) – The Municipality and the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) are announcing a partnership to help support people evacuated because of flooding.

“The Municipality is pleased to announce this important partnership with the Canadian Red Cross,” said Mayor Don Scott. “The Red Cross is a key partner in our region, including in response and recovery from the 2016 wildfire and we look forward to again working with them in support of our residents during this time. We ask all residents under mandatory evacuation to please register with the Red Cross. This partnership will well serve the community as we do everything we can to ensure all available supports are in place for those that have been impacted by this historic event.”

The objective of this partnership is to support evacuated residents. The collaboration aims to provide supports to evacuated residents while not duplicating existing initiatives and while engaging local expertise. The CRC is a valuable partner with RMWB for re-entry planning and early recovery.

“The Canadian Red Cross is committed to support the people of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in this difficult time,” said Jenn McManus, Vice President, Canadian Red Cross, Alberta and Northwest Territories. “We encourage anyone affected by the flooding to please register with Red Cross, so together with the Municipality, we can help ensure people get the information and assistance they need.”

As a first step, all residents under mandatory evacuation are encouraged to register with Red Cross by calling 1-800-863-6582 between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Red Cross will provide registration, information and referral services to flood-impacted residents within the region. Residents who have already registered with the Municipality should also register with the Red Cross to ensure that they can be reached with information and assistance on further services that may be available during this time of need.

Mandatory Evacuation Orders remain in effect for Draper, Waterways, Taiga Nova Industrial Park and the Lower Townsite of Fort McMurray. The Northern Lights Health Regional Health Centre is not impacted by this evacuation. Access to the Lower Townsite is closed to the public and re-entry is not permitted at this time.
