Federation of Canadian Municipalities provide funds to RMWB for vulnerable populations in response to COVID-19

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 14, 2020) – The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has been selected as one of the communities to receive support from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations. The funds come as part of a donation to the FCM from the Canadian Medical Association Foundation.

Mayor Don Scott and Councillor Krista Balsom, who sits on the FCM Board of Directors, have provided the following statements on news of the funding.

Mayor Don Scott:

“I want to express my thanks to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the Canadian Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) for their support during this particularly trying time in our region. Already facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a weakened economy, our community now finds itself recovering from a devastating one-in-one-hundred year level flood. I am very aware of how all this compounds together and the toll it can have on mental health. I am filled with a deep gratitude for organizations like the FCM, CMAF, and recent announcements from the Government of Alberta, as it relates to supporting the health and wellness of our residents. I encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for support.”

Councillor Krista Balsom and member of the FCM Board of Directors:

“I am very happy for this support from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations. Given the mix of urban and rural areas, and the current flood recovery we are working through, this funding is very well timed. There are a variety of options this funding can be used for, ranging from health and medical services to client support services. We will work to identify gaps in our urban and rural communities and see best where these dollars can be applied.”
