Fort Chipewyan Winter Road load limit increases to 15,000 kg

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 4, 2019) – Beginning today, the load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been increased to 15,000 kg and under.

Motorists with vehicles heavier than 15,000 kg are requested to stay off the winter road until load limits have been increased. Overly heavy vehicles could damage the road causing safety hazards or delays in reaching heavier load limits once the ice thickens.

Motorists are advised there is a steep ramp at the Athabasca River located 32 km south of Fort Chipewyan. Only 4x4 equipped vehicles should be used when travelling the road.

Barricades are expected to be posted at the river crossings to direct traffic away from recently flooded or unfrozen sections of ice. Motorists are asked to follow all posted signage and barricades when crossing rivers.

As there are workers, equipment and other motorists on the road, please stay on the right side of the road on hills for enhanced safety, drive to road conditions and obey all posted signage.

Remember to watch for workers and equipment working along the road. When passing equipment, please reduce speed to 30 km/h for everyone’s safety.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage so always be prepared for emergencies.
