Fort Chipewyan Winter Road opens December 19

(Fort McMurray, AB – December 18, 2019) – The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will open to light traffic 5,000 kg and lower as of 8:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 19.

Motorists with vehicles heavier than 5,000 kg are requested to stay off the winter road until load limits have been increased. Overly heavy vehicles could damage the road causing safety hazards or delays in reaching heavier load limits.

Crews have prepared an alternate route and ice crossings in certain areas to ensure the road is safe and accessible for light traffic. Motorists are asked to reduce speed while travelling on this portion of the road. Rough patches throughout the road and recent snowfalls have also impacted the road, and motorists are reminded to drive to road conditions at all times, while following all posted signage.

As there are workers, equipment and other motorists on the road, please stay on the right side of the road, especially on hills for enhanced safety. When passing equipment, please reduce speed to 30 km/h for everyone’s safety.

Load limits are expected to increase as work on the road continues and the ice thickens. All changes to the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be formally announced.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage so always be prepared for emergencies.
