Fort Chipewyan Winter Road opens to light traffic

(Fort McMurray, AB – December 14, 2018) – The Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is opening today at 12 p.m. Initially the road will be open to light traffic 5,000 kg and lower only.

Motorists with vehicles heavier than 5,000 kg are requested to stay off the winter road until load limits have been increased. Overly heavy vehicles could damage the road causing safety hazards or delays in reaching heavier load limits once the ice thickens.

Motorists are advised there is a steep ramp at the Athabasca River located 32 km south of Fort Chipewyan. Only 4x4 equipped vehicles should be used when travelling the road.

As there are workers, equipment and other motorists on the road, please stay on the right side of the road on hills for enhanced safety, drive to road conditions and obey all posted signage.

Remember to watch for workers and equipment working along the road. When passing equipment, please reduce speed to 30 km/h for everyone’s safety.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage so always be prepared for emergencies.
