Fort Chipewyan winter road load limit increases to 45,000 kg – Sign up for email notifications online

(Fort McMurray, AB – January 29, 2019) – Beginning today, the load limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road has been increased to 45,000 kg and under.

Residents are also reminded of the new email subscription tool for winter road and trail updates. Visit rmwb.ca/winterroads and click on the subscribe icon to sign up for email notifications. Those signed up for the notifications will receive a direct email when the Municipality announces winter road and trail updates. Don’t forget to check your inbox for a confirmation email.

Motorists with vehicles heavier than 45,000 kg are requested to stay off the winter road. Overly heavy vehicles could damage the road or cause safety hazards.

Barricades are expected to be posted at the river crossings to direct traffic away from recently flooded or unfrozen sections of ice. Motorists are asked to follow all posted speed limits, signage and barricades when crossing rivers.

As there are workers, equipment and other motorists on the road, please stay on the right side of the road on hills for enhanced safety, drive to road conditions and obey all posted signage.

Remember to watch for workers and equipment working along the road. When passing equipment, please reduce speed to 30 km/h for everyone’s safety.

There are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage so always be prepared for emergencies.

Updates will be provided regularly as required. Check the following sources for the latest information or sign up for email notifications on the winter roads page listed below:
