Landfill will return to regular operating hours and lift some COVID-19 restrictions June 1


(Fort McMurray, AB – May 29, 2020) – On June 1, the Fort McMurray Regional Landfill will return to regular operating hours and will begin to accept some items that had been previously restricted in response to COVID-19.

Hour of operation:

The regular hours of operation are 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., seven days a week. The Public Drop Off Scale will also be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.   

On May 5, the Municipality extended the hours of operation of the landfill to help support residents and business owners in flood-affected areas clean up after the April 2020 Flood. The Municipality also waived commercial and non-commercial disposal fees at the landfill to help support the community in recovery efforts. Fees for disposing of non-commercial waste at the landfill are waived until August 31, 2020 and commercial disposal fees are waived until June 30, 2020.

Accepting more items for disposal:

Effective June 1, the landfill will begin accepting some items that had previously been restricted due to COVID-19, including:

  • CFC appliances (fridges, freezers, a/c units, water coolers, etc.)
  • Electronics, automotive oil, paint and other household hazardous waste
  • Aluminum cans (to be placed in metal bins at Public Drop Off Area at the landfill)

The landfill will also continue to accept household waste, mattresses and box springs, furniture, tires, scrap metal, construction, demolition and renovation materials, soils (according to accepted guidelines), brush, trees and yard waste materials.

Recycling material such as paper cardboard and plastics will continue to be accepted but disposed of as residential waste.
