Mayor Scott statement on Province’s announcement of Disaster Recovery Program support

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 8, 2020) – Mayor Don Scott has provided the following statement on the Government of Alberta’s announcement of Disaster Recovery Program support:

“Friday afternoon, Premier Kenney and the Government of Alberta announced it would be providing $100 million to our region under the Disaster Recovery Program. This is great news in support of our community and the people and businesses impacted by this historic flood.

While we are just beginning our path to recovery, this commitment from the Province demonstrates how Albertans always come together to help each other during challenging times. We need to look no further than our own community to see this in action every day – to those of you that are impacted to the countless volunteers to our first responders and our municipal staff and many partners  – I can’t thank you enough for what you’re doing. You are an inspiration to me and to everyone.

I would also like to thank my Council colleagues, some of them who are impacted themselves, for their tireless efforts in championing our community and advocating and being there for those most impacted. I can tell you that their collective efforts are truly making a difference and I have seen over the last two weeks just how much they care about you and our home.

On behalf of the region, I would like to thank Premier Kenney, Minister Madu and our MLAs Laila Goodridge and Tany Yao for their leadership and timely support to our residents when it is most needed. Premier Kenney understands our region and its importance to Alberta and like he said when he came to visit the community last Monday, no region has given more to Alberta and Canada than Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo.

I recognize that we have many challenges remaining, and, in many ways, the hard work is just getting started. There will be ups and downs and successes and difficulties, and I know that while this important funding announcement from Premier Kenney and the Province will go a long way, there is no perfect in recovery as this community knows as well as any given what we’ve been through together in recent years.

What I do know is that our community has persevered before and, together, we will once again. We look forward to working with our provincial and other partners to release more details on how this will help you recover in the days ahead. This is a great step in the right direction.

For now, stay strong, stay safe and stay together. Take care of each other.”
