Municipal service update: facility closures and postponed events

(Fort McMurray, AB – March 13, 2020) – As a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and aligned with Alberta Health Services public health recommendations, the Municipality is closing certain facilities and postponing upcoming events. 

“Public health and safety and the well-being of residents is and will always be our priority,” said CAO Annette Antoniak “The Municipality is taking this situation very seriously and taking measures to prepare and protect all residents and communities within the region. We understand the impact these closures and cancellations may have on our community and appreciate everyone’s patience.”

Effective March 14, 2020, the following facilities will be closed until further notice: 

Casman Centre (Thickwood Heights Daycare will remain open)
Frank Lacroix Arena
Doug Barnes Cabin 
Vista Ridge Ski Hill

Fort Chipewyan facility closures include:
Sonny Flett Aquatic Centre  
Archie Simpson Arena 
Syncrude Youth Centre  
Mamawi Hall

These upcoming events are postponed or cancelled until further notice: 
 
Winter Maintenance engagement sessions - all in-person sessions are postponed. Residents can still leave feedback online
Downtown Revitalization Incentive Pilot Project (DRIPP) design charettes – all sessions are postponed
Monday Senior Lunch in Janvier – cancellation of March events
Wednesday Senior Lunch in Janvier – cancellation of March events
Senior Luncheon in Conklin on March 24 – cancelled 
Janvier Community Event on April 9 – postponed until further notice  

Municipal offices and public transit will remain open, with increased cleaning protocols and prevention measures in place. Members of the public that have meetings or other events scheduled with the Municipality should check with organizers on the status of these activities.  

Moving forward, there may be other changes in services, but business continuity plans are in place to provide the essential services that keep community members safe and the municipality running. All municipal updates regarding service changes will continue to be available at rmwb.ca/covid19.
