Municipality releases costs in Councillor conduct court case

(Fort McMurray, AB – Feb. 5, 2019) – Subsequent to the conclusion of a recent court case involving an elected member of Council, the Municipality is releasing the costs of litigation related to the case.

“We are committed to responsible government and ensuring we are open in our communication to the public, so we are sharing the costs incurred by the Municipality as a result of this process,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Administrative Officer. 

Legal fees incurred by the Municipality for the case are currently $83,588.00 (excluding GST) with disbursement costs of $1,002.98 (excluding GST).

The court case followed a Councillor disqualification application in response to a Council motion related to a conflict of interest investigation initiated under the Municipality’s Whistleblower Policy. The Municipality incurred $19,932.66 (excluding GST) in costs for the third-party investigation into the matter.
