Municipality to host truth and reconciliation sharing circle – exploring the past, talking about the present and looking to the future of reconciliation in the region

(Fort McMurray, AB – October 15, 2019) – The Municipality has launched registration for the Truth and Reconciliation Sharing Circle, taking place October 23.

Free and open to the public, the event provides two opportunities to participate with a morning and evening session. Each session will detail the Municipality’s commitment to reconciliation, and is in direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s report published in 2015. On November 8, 2016, Regional Council began its commitment to reviewing the Calls to Action report. This review identified where the Municipality has the jurisdiction and ability to implement calls to action in the region.

“The sharing circle offers an opportunity for residents from across the region to come together to discuss Truth and Reconciliation and help identify ways that we, as a community, can continue this important work together,” said Mayor Don Scott. “This exercise will support us in moving our region forward on the path to reconciliation.”

Since 2017, the Municipality has engaged with Indigenous communities on how best to move forward together. Discussions at the sharing circle will continue this momentum, guiding the Municipality in the right direction. Participants will be invited to share in collaborative discussions that will identify concrete actions to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian Reconciliation. Several themes which will be discussed at the sharing circle include:

Language and Culture
Youth
Programs and Services
Indigenous engagement and Inclusion
