RMWB Mayor and CAO statement on fourth anniversary of 2016 wildfire evacuation

(Fort McMurray, AB – May 3, 2020) – Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Mayor Don Scott and Chief Administrative Officer Jamie Doyle have provided the following statements on the fourth anniversary of the 2016 Horse River wildfire evacuation.

Mayor Don Scott:

“It was evident on May 3, 2016 and it is evident today: we are a region of resilience. The recent river breakup flood has reminded me of the incredible generosity of our residents. That generosity was on display on that evacuation day four years ago, where neighbour helped neighbour, and it continues today.

For some, May 3, 2016 is a distant memory. For others, it is a bitter reminder of a rebuild that didn’t go the way it should have or an ongoing battle with an insurance provider. Regardless of your circumstance, I want you to know that you are not forgotten by your community. I also want to encourage anyone who is struggling around this day, to please reach out and ask for help or seek out mental health and wellness resources.”

Jamie Doyle, Chief Administrative Officer:

“May 3, 2016 was one of the most challenging days our region and our organization has ever faced. Between COVID-19 and the recent flooding, staff have spent a significant amount of time in our emergency operations centre this year. Like May 3 four years ago, these emergency responses can be incredibly stressful on our staff, particularly if they have been directly impacted as a resident. I would like to express my sincerest thanks to our staff for their dedication and acknowledge their hard work and the sacrifice they are making to serve our residents. If you have the opportunity, I encourage you to express your thanks to a member of municipal staff or to a first responder. Their commitment to Wood Buffalo helps to keep us safe and contributes to making our region a great place to call home.”
