RMWB Statement on use of military and use of local businesses

(Fort McMurray, AB – April 29, 2020) – Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo administration have provided the following statement on the use of military in the response to the river breakup and flood, as well as the use of local businesses.

Use of military:

“Over the last several days there have been discussions about bringing in the military to support in our response to the river breakup and flood response. We also recognize that our Council has had conversations with different levels of government regarding this matter and there is a willingness by those levels of government to action a request that may come from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Every day we evaluate our emergency response resources, be it personnel or materials. As part of this evaluation we consider what resources will be required in the days and weeks ahead to successfully respond and recover from this year’s river breakup and subsequent flood. At this time, we do not feel there is a need to bring in the military to support our efforts. We will continue to assess and evaluate, and should conditions change we will reconsider a request. We appreciate the support that the Federal and Provincial governments have extended to us and appreciate the variety of options that have been made available to us in our response.”

  • Scott Davis, Director of Emergency Management

Use of local companies in response and recovery:

“We would like to express our thanks to the many local companies that have reached out to offer their services as we respond to the river breakup and flood response. This event will have a variety of phases, including response and recovery. As we move through these phases we will be mindful to use local contractors where ever this is possible. As an Administration, we recognize the challenges that our local business community has been through even in just the last few months, and we want to do what we can to support the region’s business sector and ensure that our local economy thrives.”
