RMWB announces changes to enhance Family and Community Support Services in the region

To better support the community, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is transitioning its Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) funding for counselling services to two existing counselling agencies in the region: Waypoints and Legacy Counselling Centre.

This transition will increase the capacity of counselling services in the community while also increasing the services available in the rural communities. This funding will enable Waypoints to fund three FCSS counsellors, while Legacy will be able to fund two. This is an increase from four FCSS funded counsellors within the RMWB.

“We are pleased to receive the FCSS funding through the Community Investment Program, and look forward to seeing the positive impact this change in service has on the community,” said Del Bouck, spokesperson for Legacy Counselling Centre’s Board of Directors.

“The FCSS funding will ensure our counselling programs have an even broader reach than before, and we are thrilled to be able to expand our counselling services,” said Michele Taylor, Executive Director, Waypoints.

Beginning in 2020, the FCSS counselling services provided by the RMWB will be provided by partner agencies, Legacy Counselling Centre and Waypoints. The RMWB will continue working closely with both agencies to ensure a smooth transition for existing and future clients.

This summer, a comprehensive review of the region’s counselling services was conducted, including the RMWB’s FCSS counselling services. This review included strategic recommendations for building the region’s capacity of counselling services and outlined recommendations and opportunities for improvement. Increasing FCSS funding and support for counselling agencies was identified as an opportunity to improve counselling services in the region.
