Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to host Canada Day 2020 celebrations virtually and through other means

(Fort McMurray, AB – June 4, 2020) – With July 1 fast approaching, the RMWB, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) and the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) have joined together to plan a vibrant celebration of Canada Day, that follows the public health guidelines related to Covid-19.

“This Canada Day comes at an important time for our region during what has been a challenging year in many ways,” said Mayor Don Scott. “Canada Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be Canadian and to call our region home and offers an opportunity to think about how we can listen and learn from each other’s experiences to inspire positive change. I encourage everyone to safely celebrate Canada Day this year in a way that exemplifies our best qualities as we renew our commitment to taking care of each other.”

Due to provincial public health orders restricting the size of public gatherings, many of the annual community events celebrating Canada Day are transitioning to virtual formats or being replaced with new, fun, and safe ways for families and individuals to honour this important date. The group is collaborating on the festivities and will be releasing a complete schedule very shortly.

The planning has started with the MCA encouraging residents of all ages and backgrounds to showcase their culture by singing O Canada in any language they wish, either as an individual or with family and friends following appropriate physical distancing rules. Participants are encouraged to get creative, dress in red and white, decorate the background, and showcase what Canada and our community mean to you. Visit mcawb.org for more details.

More information about the many ways to celebrate Canada Day 2020 across the region  will be posted on rmwb.ca/canadaday as it becomes available.
