Residents invited to Fire Prevention Week community kickoff

(Fort McMurray, AB – September 19, 2019) - Regional Emergency Services (RES) is hosting the Fire Prevention Week Community Kickoff event on Saturday, October 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at MacDonald Island Park.

The community event welcomes residents to learn about fire prevention and general safety while getting to interact with local firefighters and industry partners. Residents are encouraged to tour the interactive fire safety trailer, get up close and personal with various firefighting equipment and trucks, and learn about how you can help prevent fires. The event includes a free barbeque and offers an array of activities for the whole family.

Fire Prevention Week is recognized from Oct. 6 to 12 with this year’s theme being: “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape!”. Residents are reminded to develop and practice a home escape plan regularly as you could have less than two minutes to get out of your house safely during a home fire.

  • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave — this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
