Road closures and transit detours in place for Santa Claus Parade Dec. 1

(Fort McMurray, AB – November 28, 2018) – Did you know that Santa Claus is coming to Wood Buffalo on Dec. 1 for the annual Santa Claus Parade?

Residents are reminded to use caution, anticipate traffic delays, and to plan ahead for transit detours if travelling downtown Fort McMurray on the day of the parade.

Safety of parade spectators, participants, and volunteers are a priority. Spectators must remain on the sidewalk, while keeping a safe distance away from the parade. All participants in the parade need to follow the safety requirements and rules reviewed during the safety orientation. Parade participants not in compliance with safety requirements and rules will be removed from the parade.

The Santa Claus Parade begins on Riedel Street at 6 p.m., continues onto Franklin Avenue, and finishes on Morrison Street.

The following roads will be closed during the stated timeframes to make room for Santa and his helpers:
Clearwater Drive (Morrison Street to Riedel Street) 12:00 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Clearwater Drive (Riedel Street to Hospital Street) 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Riedel Street 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Franklin Avenue 6:00 p.m. - 7:45 p.m.
Morrison Street 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Road closure times are approximate. As the parade passes, roads will reopen. For the safety of volunteers and parade participants, barricades will be set up to prevent vehicles accessing the closed roads.

To accommodate these road closures and float staging for the parade, the following transit routes will be affected on Dec. 1:

Routes 10, 11, 15, 16, 18, 91, 92, and 99

Residents and visitors are encouraged to get in the festive spirit before the parade at Mayor and Councillors’ Holly Jolly Party at Jubilee Plaza. Starting at 5 p.m., enjoy free cocoa and cookies with Council, festive surprises and the lighting of the RMWB Christmas Tree, as Wood Buffalo awaits Santa’s arrival on Franklin Avenue.

The Santa Claus Parade Community Committee is hosting additional family-friendly activities this holiday season, including the Elf Workshop on Dec. 1 from 12 to 4:30 p.m. at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library, and Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 2 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Peter Pond Mall. The Committee is also encouraging residents to bring donations for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank to grocery stores around the parade route in support of the Syncrude Food Drive.
