Transit updates announced, including school service: effective August 30

(Fort McMurray, AB – August 19, 2019) – Transit Services is announcing updates to routes and schedules effective Friday, August 30. Updates include enhancements to school service and school specials, and updates to routes in Timberlea and Thickwood that will incorporate two new bus terminals to be opened in the fall.

All school service has been developed in collaboration with the Fort McMurray Public School District and Catholic School Board. School Special routes will take effect on September 3 for the first day of school.

Highlights of updates to school service
Specific schedules and maps are posted on the municipal website under School Service: Regular Routes and School Specials at rmwb.ca/transit. Schools impacted by the updates to service include the following:
Composite High School
École McTavish
Father Mercredi High School
Holy Trinity High School
Westwood High School

Two new bus terminals – Thickwood and Timberlea
The Municipality is constructing two new bus terminals to enhance connectivity and convenience. One terminal is located on Thickwood Blvd. in front of the Casman Centre. The other is located in Timberlea on Confederation Way at the corner of Paquette Dr.

Both terminals have been fully funded through federal and provincial grant funding.

The new bus terminals will enhance routing, transfers, and connections on the north side of the Athabasca Bridge. This service will also make getting downtown even simpler. See more about the project at rmwb.ca/construction and click on the Building Infrastructure icon.

Temporary Detours – Making way for new terminals
The terminals are still under construction and are anticipated to be ready for the fall. To accommodate construction, some minor transit detours have been put in place, which will have minimal impact on route timing and stop locations. School Special service will not be impacted by the detours.

Routes required to detour will provide service to existing transit hubs at Signal Rd. Station in Thickwood (Stop #5081), and Powder Dr. Station in Timberlea (Stop #7094) until the new terminals are ready.

The following regular routes will be impacted by detours:
Route 9 (Cartier Heights / Brett Drive)
Route 12 (Thickwood/Timberlea)
Route 15 (Timberlea)
Route 16 (Thickwood)
Route 17 (Parsons Creek / Morgan Heights)
Route 41 (Stone Creek / Eagle Ridge)
Route 51 (Wood Buffalo)
Route 61 (Thickwood)

Current and new schedules are posted online at rmwb.ca/transit, so riders can plan ahead for August 30 and September 3. Detours related to bus terminal construction will be posted along with regular schedules for impacted routes. All other detours and service alerts will be posted at rmwb.ca/transit-alerts.

Further details will be announced once the new terminals are ready for public use.
