Frequently asked questions
If I am interested in several positions, do I have to submit a resume for each competition? |
Every competition is considered separately. If you are applying for several positions, a separate resume is required for each position. |
How are applicants assessed? |
All applicants are assessed relative to the qualifications listed in the job description/posting. Applicants who meet the education and experience requirements may be eligible for further consideration. Meeting the minimum qualifications of the posting does not automatically mean you will be shortlisted or selected for an interview for the available position as all applicants are assessed on a competitive basis. |
How long does the selection process take? |
Most positions are filled within six weeks. |
Do you screen resumes by keywords? |
No. This is a common misconception. Our recruitment team is responsible for reviewing applicants' resumes and selecting candidates for the hiring managers to review. We use the information provided by the applicant, including several pre-screening questions and their resume, to make that assessment. |
Do you consider internal applicants first? |
Yes. If it is a unionized position, consideration must be given to employees who are part of the bargaining unit prior to interviewing any external applicants. |
What jobs are available for students? |
We hire students in several our departments. Please check our website in February for available student jobs. |
Do applicants have to go through skill testing or medical testing? |
Some positions require confirmation of skills through various testing processes. A pre-employment medical examination may be required for certain positions. |
Does the Municipality accept education and training courses completed outside of Canada? |
Yes, however, any foreign education must be formally assessed as equivalent to Canadian education prior to finalizing the hiring process. |
Is the Municipality taking part in the Government of Alberta's Rural Renewal Stream? |
The Workforce Immigration and Support Program (WISP) is the local approach to the provincial government's Rural Renewal Stream. WISP supports local employers experiencing ongoing labour shortages by providing a fast-track to permanent residency combined with newcomer support services. For more information, visit fmwb.ca/WISP. |
Can an individual work in two or more jobs at the same time with the Municipality? |
No. Individuals can hold only one position at a time with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. |
What should I do if I'm encountering technical issues when attempting to apply online? |
We recommend that people apply early to avoid possible issues on the day the competition closes. If you would like help with your application, please contact us using the contact information in the yellow box on this page. |
