What should I do if the smoke is affecting me? |
- If you are experiencing symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches and shortness of breath due to wildfire smoke and air quality, call Health Link at 811 or visit the Nunee Health Clinic for help.
- Wildfire smoke can travel long distances and affect air quality. People with heart and lung conditions are at a higher risk of being affected by air quality and should avoid being outside for long periods of time. Find additional health advice for wildfire smoke here.
- Air quality is closely monitored, with stations throughout the region. Find up-to-date information on air quality events and advisories on the Government of Canada’s Air Quality Health Index and the Wood Buffalo Environment Association Monitoring Map or their mobile app.

What evacuation plans are in place? |
- All Fort Chipewyan partners continue to work closely together to ensure emergency management plans are ready to be activated if needed.
- If an evacuation order is issued, help will be available to anyone who needs it. Evacuees that need temporary accommodations and support will need to register in-person as an evacuee at the Archie Simpson Arena or the Big Dock Boat Launch (for people leaving with their own boat). Anyone who does not need support, will still need to register online as an evacuee through the My Alberta Emergency Registration System.
- All evacuation orders will be communicated with the community through emergency officials on the ground, automated text messages, calls, Alertable, RMWB Facebook and Twitter accounts and the Municipal website.
- Please note, it is dangerous to remain in an evacuated area. Areas under evacuation may not have power, water or emergency services available.
|
What can I do to prepare for a possible evacuation? |
- Download the Alertable app for your smartphone. Local emergency alerts are sent through this app.
- Set up an account on My Alberta Emergency Registration System. This will make your registration process easier during an evacuation.
- Prepare your emergency kit or “go bag” with supplies to support you and your family for up to 72 hours. Be sure to pack important medications, documents (identification, birth certificates, passports, etc.), and electronics with a charger. Other items to consider:
-
- Personal medications and prescriptions
- Important documents, such as I.D. passports, birth certificates.
- Electronics with a charger
- First aid kit
- Snacks
- Portable cleaning wipes, non-medical masks, hand sanitizer and trash bags

|
What steps do I take if evacuations begin? |
- Prepare to leave for at least 72 hours and follow the instructions of emergency responders.
- Secure your home by locking all doors and windows. Leave a note on your door to inform family members when you left and where you went.
- Tell your neighbours, friends and family in the community that an evacuation order has been issued
- Do not attempt search and rescue operations on your own. Call 9-1-1 for assistance.
- Go to the Archie Simpson Arena or the Big Dock Boat Launch (If you have a boat) to begin registering as an evacuee. If you do not need transportation or temporary lodging, you still need to register online as an evacuee.

What do I do with my pets during an evacuation? |
- Take them with you to the Archie Simpson Arena. Please make sure your animal is on a leash, and if you have a crate please bring it. You may also bring your pet to the Big Dock Boat Launch (if you are leaving with your own boat).
- Animal Control officers will be available to support with the safe evacuation of your animals as well as help locate any pets left behind. We will make every effort to evacuate your pet, understanding that the safe evacuation of community members is the priority.
