Wildfires

Wildfire season is between May and September and threatens every community in Wood Buffalo.

Before a wildfire

  • Listen to the local media
  • Sign up for Alberta Emergency Alert
  • Tune into this website, Twitter or Facebook
  • Arrange with neighbours to tell one another of an emergency notification
  • Prepare an emergency kit for your household
  • FireSmart around your home
  • Make an emergency plan for your household
  • Do a fire prevention assessment of inside your home
  • Get in touch with your out-of-area contact
  • Close all windows and doors in the house
  • Cover vents, windows and other openings to the house
  • Back your car into your parking spot
  • Move combustible material away from the windows

During a wildfire

  • Listen for emergency information and alerts
  • Evacuate your home if told to do so

Dealing with the smoke

  • Limit outdoor activity
  • Drinks lots of water
  • Keep doors and windows closed
  • Use a clean, good quality air filter for your ventilation system
  • Weather-strip your home to prevent the entry of dust, pollen, and other material into your home
  • Use a room air purifier
  • Avoid using vacuums, burning candles or incense
  • If possible, leave the area
  • Take care of your mental health
  • Talk to your physician if you have respiratory problems to avoid making your existing condition worse
