Heavy Item Pickup

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo provides regular garbage and recycling collection to residents throughout the region. However, large household items cannot be set out for regular waste collection.

To help residents dispose of large and heavy household items in a cost-effective way, the municipality offers the Heavy Item Pickup program and hosts Big Bin events each year.

Heavy item pickup

How to register

When registration opens in the spring, please register online or contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 for the Heavy Item Pickup program. As a participant in the program, you can register up to four items per household.

If you miss the registration, you can also dispose of your heavy household items during the big bin events that run every weekend throughout June in various locations throughout the region.

Accepted items

The program allows residents to schedule curb-side pickup of the following items:

  • Sofas / couches
  • Love seats / chairs
  • Mattresses / box springs
  • Treadmills
  • Metal frame bed
  • Dressers
  • Stoves
  • Dishwashers
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Large televisions (24-inch tube or 27 inches and larger)
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Tables - kitchen / dining room
  • Desk - office / computer

Please note: A fee of $46.00 will be charged for refrigerant gas removal. Removal is required as it is classified as a hazardous waste and needs to be contained so it does not contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer. Only a certified technician can remove the refrigerant gases. Any unit that has refrigerant gas removed prior to pick up needs a certificate from the specialist who removed the refrigerant.

Items not accepted

BBQs are not accepted in the Heavy Item Pickup program.

Fees

The municipality will pick-up a number of registered heavy items at no charge. However, there will be additional fees for CFC appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, water coolers and air conditioners.

Note: Please note that documentation is required should you have CFC removed by a technician.

Important tips for collection

  • Heavy items registered for collection must be put out to the curb by 8 a.m. on the assigned pickup day.
  • All heavy items must be placed by the FRONT curb, even if you normally receive back alley collection for garbage and recycling.
  • Please ensure items are easily accessible for pickup when they are placed at the curb. As always, your civic address number must be clearly visible from the roadside.
  • Due to demand and routes, it could take up to 48 hours for pickup. Crews cannot go onto private property or go back for items that have not been put out for collection by the deadline.
  • Any non-registered items will be left at the curb and are the responsibility of the property owner.
  • Doors on refrigerators and freezers must be removed prior to pickup to prevent children and small animals from being trapped. Item(s) must be clean with no food inside.

Big Bin events

Big Bin events are held at various locations throughout the region every weekend in June. Please subscribe to this page to be notified when a new schedule is posted.

During Big Bin Events, the Solid Waste Services team will be on-site to support the collection and unloading of large household items.

Required documentation

Residents will be required to show photo ID and proof of address before disposing of any items that have a fee associated with disposal.

Accepted items and fees

The Big Bin events allow residents to drop off large household items that cannot be set out for regular waste collection. This includes large furniture, appliances, renovation materials and yard waste.

Most large household items will be accepted at the Big Bin Events at no charge. However, fees will be applicable for the following items. Fees will not be collected at the events. Applicable fees will be applied to monthly utility bills.

CFC appliances:

  • Includes refrigerators, freezers, water coolers and air conditioners.
  • Items that have CFC removed beforehand are required to have documentation from a certified technician. Failure to produce documentation could result in charges for CFC removal.

For more information on disposal of large items please call PULSE at 780-743-7000.
