Council has established a number of boards and committees that serve the Wood Buffalo community in a volunteer capacity. These boards help to advise and inform Mayor and Councillors on matters that impact the public, giving residents access and input with decision makers in government.
Positions available on several Council Appointed Committees
Community members are being sought for positions on the Communities In Bloom Committee, Public Art Committee and Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee.

To submit written comments as a delegate to an item on a Committee Meeting Agenda, please submit a Written Submission Delegate Form. Your written comments will be included in the Committee Meeting Agenda Package and will form part of the public record for the Committee Meeting. Written submissions must be in reference to a specific item on a Committee Meeting Agenda. Agendas for Committee meetings are published on the Friday of the week before the meeting.
Council Appointed Committees and Boards
Advisory Committee on Aging |
The Advisory Committee on Aging's mandate is to gather public input and make strategic recommendations to Council regarding service delivery for seniors. In late 2015, the ACOA and its partner agencies hosted a series of engagements to capture public input towards the Committee's vision of Aging with Dignity in Wood Buffalo. In addition to public engagement, the ACOA has, with Council approval, applied to the World Health Organization and began working toward the requirements for designation as an Age-friendly Community. |
Assessment Review Boards |
The Assessment Review Boards are quasi-judicial boards that are established to hear appeals regarding assessment notices and tax notices (other than property tax) and make decisions on these appeals in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Government Act. Combative Sports Commission |
The mission of the RMWB Combative Sports Commision is to enhance the quality, safety and reputation of combative sports events. |
Community Identification Committee |

Community Investment Program Advisory Committee |
This committee will review the Municipality's Community Investment Program and make recommendations to Council on improvements and enhancements. |
Communities in Bloom Committee |
Helping hands are always appreciated! The Communities in Bloom board coordinates and assists with Communities in Bloom activities and programs. |
Community Standards Appeal Committee |
The Community Standards Appeal Committee hears and adjudicates appeals by any person who has received an order under the Municipal Government Act or the Animal Control Bylaw. |
Fort McMurray Airport Authority |
The Fort McMurray Airport Authority is responsible to manage and operate the Fort McMurray Airport. As an authority under the Airport Authorities Act, it will operate at arms' length from the Municipality; however, the Municipality, as an appointer, has the responsibility to appoint three members to the Authority. |
Public Art Committee |
The Public Art Committee makes recommendations on the content of the Municipal Public Art Program. |
Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equity |
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is committed to inclusion, diversity and equity. As part of its mission, the Municipality aims to create a welcoming community, serving the needs of an increasingly diverse population. |
Regional Recreation Corporation Board |
The Regional Recreation Corporation Board provides governance and oversight to the corporation as it develops and delivers comprehensive recreation and sport initiatives throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. |
Subdivision and Development Appeal Board |
The Subdivision and Development Appeal Board is a quasi-judicial board, meaning its meetings are conducted in a court-like manner. Board members hear subdivision and development appeals and make decisions on these appeals in accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Government Act, statutory plans (Municipal Development Plan, Area Structure Plans and Land Use Bylaw), and Provincial and Council policies. |
Wood Buffalo Regional Library Board |
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Library Board is the legal entity that manages and controls the Wood Buffalo Regional Library. The Library Board operates within the legal framework set out the by the Alberta Government under the authority of the Libraries Act. |

This committee advises municipal administration and Council on local development initiatives, including development and construction issues, community-based issues, public engagement activities and region-wide economic priorities. |
Wood Buffalo 2023 Arctic Winter Games Host Society |
When a municipality is awarded the right to host an Arctic Winter Games (AWG), it forms a Host Society to manage the event based on the terms of the hosting contract and the AWG Staging Manual. The Host Society will plan, develop and carry out all aspects of the 2023 Wood Buffalo Arctic Winter Games. |
Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee |
The mandate of the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to Council on matters pertaining to downtown revitalization and provide a timely and considered response to Council to all downtown revitalization matters referred to the board by Council. |
Wood Buffalo Transportation Advisory Committee |
The mandate of the Wood Buffalo Transportation Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to Council on advocacy matters pertaining to the development and operation of the regional transportation system and to provide a timely and considered response to Council on regional transportation matters referred to the Committee by Council. |
Wood Buffalo Waterfront Advisory Committee |
The mandate of the Wood Buffalo Waterfront Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to Council on matters pertaining to waterfront revitalization and provide a timely and considered response to Council to all waterfront revitalization matters referred to the board by Council. |
