The Municipality maintains over 1200 hectares of parkland, including:

  • 8 spray parks, 103 playgrounds, 4 skate parks, 7 outdoor rinks, 4 dog parks, 58 sports fields, 10 tennis courts, 1 bike skills park, 3 boat launches
  • 5 cemetaries
  • 2800 park amenities, 55 parking lots
  • 314 km of trail/parkways, 84 km of sidewalks, 35 km of winter groomed trail, 12 km of crosswalks
  • 400 planters, 200 hanging baskets and 13 hectares of inground planting beds

Environmental Services

Provides Landfill Operations, Water Treatment/Wastewater Treatment and Underground Services.

Programs and Services at a Glance:

  • Recovers, Reuses, and Recycles nearly 44,000 tonnes of material per year.
  • Landfills over 88,000 tonnes of waste per year.
  • Operates and maintains:
    • 2 Engineered Landfills
    • 2 Transfer Stations
    • 5 Recycling Depots
    • 21 Collection Vehicles
    • 54,500 Curbside Collection Bins (Waste and Recycling)

The RMWB operates and maintains:

  • 375 kms of water mains
  • 300 kms of storm sewer
  • 333 kms of sanitary sewer
  • 1 Regional Water Treatment Plant
  • 4 Rural Community Water Treatment Plants
  • 11 Potable Pump Stations + 3 Booster Stations
  • 10 Drinking Water Reservoirs
  • 6 Truck Fill Stations
  • 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant with Compost Facility
  • 5 Rural Lagoon Wastewater Treatment Systems
  • 23 Sanitary Lift Stations in urban and rural communities

More than 9-billion litres of tap water treated annually.

Transit Services

Provides public transportation services within the region. Services include local scheduled bus routes, school service, and specialized mobility assistance required transportation (SMART Bus).

  • Offers three types of public transportation – Conventional, Rural and Specialized
  • Accessible curb-to-curb SMART Bus service available for seniors (65 or over) or those with special needs, with mobility issues that prevent or severely restrict their use of conventional bus service.
  • Over 400 bus stops for conventional transit service in the urban service area

The Municipality maintains:

  • 650 lane km of roadway and 39 km of back alleys in the urban service area as well as 302 km of concrete sidewalk
  •  85 traffic control devices within the region
  • River break preparation and response, including the residential sandbag program.

Downtown Revitalization

Municipality has invested a significant amount in projects, programs, services and initiatives in preparation for a refreshed, revitalized downtown area.

Regional Emergency Services keep residents and communities safe by providing:

  • Emergency Social Services (ESS)

Rural Operations and Services

  • Rural Water and Sewer Services - Ongoing project to provide sewer and water connections to more than 850 lots in Anzac, Conklin, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier and Saprae Creek Estates. Local drainage improvement, 8 km of new hot asphalt roadway in Draper. Learn more about Rural Water and Sewer at rmwb.ca/rwss

  • Rural Broadband Internet Infrastructure - Project in partnership with Telus to connect Draper, Janvier, Fort McKay, Conklin, Anzac and Gregoire Lake Estates directly to high-speed fibre optic network.
  • Rural Facilities - Municipality maintains rural airport, arenas, aquatic and community centers, and other recreational facilities.
  • Rural Roads - More than 200 kilometres of Gravel and Paved roadway maintenance and 222 km of winter road (Fort Chipewyan and La Loche) construction and maintenance.

Flood Mitigation

  • Permanent Flood Mitigation – Berms and elevated roads are being built to the 1-in-200-year flood level along the Clearwater River and portions of the Hangingstone River in Fort McMurray
  • Temporary flood mitigation – Installation and removal of structural protection to the 1-in-200-year flood level in Fort McMurray as permanent flood mitigation is completed. Other temporary measures in place for river breakup, such as pumps, enhanced protection of underground systems and increased monitoring.

Budget 2021 highlights
  • $13 million reduction from the amended 2020 Budget 
  • $305 million overall budget reduction since work began in 2017 to reduce the tax ratio  
  • $44 million for flood mitigation design and construction
  • $15 million for rural water and sewer servicing
  • $40.5 million in direct community support for local non-profit organizations, including municipal facility operators
  • $43 million for fire and ambulance services
