Municipality and Province finalize Master Land Exchange Agreement
A land agreement that’s been over a decade in the making is now complete, creating potential for future regional growth and development in the region.
Through the Master Land Exchange Agreement, 536 acres of provincially owned land in Parsons Creek, Saline Creek and Downtown Fort McMurray have been officially transferred to the Municipality. These lands are now part of the Municipal Land Inventory and available for future development. Also included in the land transfer is 1.63 acres of land beside Willow Square Continuing Care Centre in downtown Fort McMurray that will be the future home of an Aging in Place facility.
“This is a significant step forward for Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo,” says Amanda Owens, Director of Planning and Development Services. “The addition of these lands strengthens the Municipality’s ability to plan responsibly for future growth and aligns with the goals outlined in our Municipal Development Plan, particularly the pillar of responsible development.”
The Master Land Exchange Agreement between the Province and the Municipality reflects a strategic trade of land-for-infrastructure. Under the agreement, the Municipality invested in key infrastructure projects on behalf of the Province, in exchange for land. Projects included upgrades to roads and intersections that enhance connectivity and safety for our region:
- Twinning of Saprae Creek Trail from West Saline Creek to Airport Road
- Intersection improvements at Saprae Creek Trail and McKenzie Boulevard
- Upgrades to the intersection of Saprae Creek Trail and West Airport Road
These infrastructure improvements paved the way for the land transfer and demonstrate the Municipality’s commitment to creating development-ready conditions that meet the needs of residents and investors.
The newly transferred lands are now part of the Municipal Land Inventory.
