Alberta Culture Days 2021

Alberta Culture Days in Wood Buffalo includes a series of free events for the entire month of September with plenty of opportunities to participate in Alberta’s largest celebration of arts, heritage, diversity and community spirit.

We continue to work with Alberta Health Services as the leading authority on COVID-19 in the province. Please note that public health measures can change quickly and could impact Alberta Culture Days and any of its activities at any time. All of September Arts Council Wood Buffalo Month of the Artist Virtual Celebration   Arts Council Wood Buffalo is celebrating Alberta Culture Days and Month of the Artist by sharing photos and bios on social media for each of the 100 nominees for Buffys 2021: Midnight in Technicolor. Buffy Awards recipients will be revealed as part of an online cinematic experience on October 16. Follow Arts Council on social media at @artscouncilwb
September 13 to 25 Wild and Free Keyano Art Gallery

A solo art show by, and in memory of, Rosalie Lorraine Bryanton.
Opening night taking place on September 17.

September 11 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Playwriting Workshop for Adults Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts  A playwriting workshop for adults, facilitated by Emma Carter and Samson Nand. Join us in learning playwriting 101! For those with oodles of playwriting experience, to those just starting their journey, this workshop is for you! Work collaboratively to create and develop your playwriting skills in this engaging and exciting workshop offered by Theatre; Just Because. Register at secpa.ca.  
September 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Introduction to Set Design Workshop Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts  Hosted by Raili Boe, this exciting workshop introduces the basics of set design for theatre. Participants will learn the fundamental elements of set design and staging vocabulary in an entertaining and participatory way. Participants will be invited to assist with creating this year's Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards broadcast on September 17, 2021. Register at secpa.ca.  
September 11 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wood Buffalo Dance Showcase Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts  To celebrate Alberta Culture Days and the return to in-person performances, the Fort McMurray Dance Association presents the Wood Buffalo Dance Showcase to display the region's immense talent and diversity in dance.
September 12 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Balloon Art Workshop Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts Explore Balloon Art! This class is for children aged 8 to 15 years old to learn basic balloon twisting and decor. Participants must know how to tie a balloon. September 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Locally Written Play Reading Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts Theatre A staged play reading of "Me, Myself, and Sid" By Samson Nand. Please join us for a staged play reading of locally written theatre! Have a seat and experience work written right here in Fort McMurray. Theatre; Just Because will be offering two staged play readings by two local playwrights and performed by local actors. Join us in watching these ideas spring to life! Register at secpa.ca.   
September 13 to 24 Mask Making Workshops Facebook and Instagram: Alberta Culture Days in Wood Buffalo, Planet Paula, Rainbow Warrior Creation Studio and Boreal Artist Institute Artist Paula Bowman from Rainbow Creek Art will host online mask making workshops that participants are welcome to wear to the Harvest Moon Masquerade Ball.
September 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sound Design Basics for Film Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts Hosted by Steve Reeve from M’Guphynn Media, the Sound Design Basics for Film workshop will cover the various uses of dialogue, score, and sound effects in film including sound mixing and ADR (automatic dialogue replacement), in addition to an introduction to the various equipment and microphones used when designing sound for film. Participants will be invited to put what they learn to use, in a hands-on opportunity to be a part of creating this year's Wood Buffalo Excellence in Arts Awards broadcast on September 18 and 19, 2021. September 18 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Rock the Rails Syncrude Athletic Park (101 Cartier Road) The 3rd annual Rock The Rails (presented by Noble Choice Coaching) is back for another great day of skateboarding, bmx and live music! Search "Rock the Rails" on Facebook or Eventbrite for more information.
September 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Locally Written Play Reading Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts A staged play reading of "Embrace" By Ashley Makey. Please join us for a staged play reading of locally written theatre! Have a seat and experience work written right here in Fort McMurray. September 25 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Harvest Moon Masquerade Ball Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts The Harvest Moon Masquerade Ball will be a fun-filled event celebrating Alberta Culture Days. The event will be an open mic event in partnership with the Full Moon Café, Rainbow Warrior Creation Studio and the Fort McMurray Bengali Association. Musicians, poets and performers will be invited to share their craft while they gain invaluable stage experience. This is a community event for all to enjoy! Register at secpa.ca.
September 26 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. An Afternoon with Shakespeare Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts Parr Academy of Vocal Arts is proud to present, "An Afternoon with Shakespeare!". The students will be performing scenes from several Shakespearean plays including "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Hamlet", "Much Ado about Nothing", "As You Like It" and the ever-bewitching, "Macbeth". The students range in age from 6 to 16, and are excited to recite the beautiful poetry of Shakespeare and breathe life into these timeless characters. Register at secpa.ca.  
September 29 and 30 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Stars of the Oilsands Rotary Music Festival Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts The Stars of the Oilsands Rotary Music Festival is an evening concert featuring amateur performers in piano, speech, voice, strings, and music composition. The line-up features talented individuals, aged 4 to 28 of age, who excelled as part of the 2021 Oilsands Rotary Music Festival and will be showcased for an evening of musical entertainment. 
September 27 - 30 World Eats in Wood Buffalo Facebook and Youtube In acknowledgement of Alberta Culture Days, the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo (MCA) will be showcasing locally filmed videos featuring various cultural cuisines from around the world. Each day will feature a video highlighting cuisine from different traditions, including Métis, India, Ukraine, Pakistan, and Morocco. In addition to World Eats in Wood Buffalo, MCA will also be hosting a Multicultural Culinary Trivia giveaway to complement the cookery showcase. Each day, from September 27 to 30, two trivia questions related to cultural cuisine will be posted. Participants who correctly guess the answer to the trivia questions will get the chance to win a copy of “McMurray Métis – Kokum’s Cookbook: Volume 1”. Two winners will be drawn each day, with a total of eight chances to win. This giveaway will take place on the MCA Facebook page, with winners announced at the end of the week.
