igNIGHT 2023

Selected artists will be awarded up to $20,000 to bring their project to life

Artists of all disciplines across Canada are invited to apply for a lead artist role for igNIGHT 2023, a public art exhibition in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo. Selected artists will be awarded a maximum of $20,000 to lead and support the creation of artwork based on this year's theme, transportation.

The exhibition will take place at Kiyām Community Park from Oct. 13 to 22, 2023, and is expected to attract a large audience. Lead artists will collaborate with local creatives to design a public art piece that explores the theme of transportation in creative and innovative ways.

“Transportation connects us all. Whether it's over land, sky, or space, humans are always exploring ways of getting from one place to another,” said Sharon Heading, Chair of the Public Art Committee. "The possibilities to bring this year’s theme to life are endless. Transport us with your vision!"

To learn more about the theme, application process and requirements, review the Call for Expressions of Interest. Interested artists can also attend a virtual information session on April 13 at 6 p.m. to get a detailed understanding of the opportunity.

About igNIGHT

igNIGHT is a 10-day temporary public art exhibition in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo. The inaugural exhibition took place in 2014, and 2023 marks the seventh edition of igNIGHT. This year's exhibition promises to be a unique and exciting opportunity for Canadian artists to showcase their work to a wider audience.

Curatorial theme: Transportation

In a world that is constantly changing, transportation is a vital constant, a link connecting us all.

Over time, transportation over land, water, sky and now space has become faster and more efficient. From moving goods using a horse drawn carriage to air dropping by drone, humans are always engineering methods that optimize efficiency of getting from one place to another.

In the future, it is expected that transportation will become much faster, safer and more sustainable. Hyperloop, a proposed high-speed transportation system, aims to transport humans at speeds up to 700 mph!

Perhaps in another dimension or a parallel world, transportation might involve teleportation or other creatures not known to our current world.

igNIGHT invites artists to explore this theme and think how they can work collaboratively to build a final installation to be exhibited from October 13-22, 2023.
Entry requirements: Artists must submit the following

Expression of Interest: Detailed description of how this project resonates with you. How will you offer opportunities for collaboration and mentorship as part of project delivery? What are some initial ideas for the final installation? What are the estimated timelines to deliver this project?

Portfolio: Original artworks created by the artist which best relate to the project proposal. A link to your online portfolio is acceptable.

Biography: Summary of the artist’s background, accomplishments and experiences leading them to their current practice (Max 200 words).

Curriculum Vitae: Detailing professional experience as an artist and other relevant information. Be sure to include at least 3 professional references.

Image List: If submitting portfolio images, include an annotated image list. A maximum of 10 images will be accepted. Please submit in jpg or pdf format.
