Homes in Saprae Creek Estates will soon be receiving bear-resistant curbside collection bins as part of a pilot project to reduce the number of wildlife interactions.
At this time, bear bins cannot be requested by individuals who aren’t a part of the pilot project in Saprae Creek. This is to ensure bin replacements are available for residents participating in the pilot project.
Bear-resistant bins
The municipality tested these bear bins on a small scale in Saprae Creek last year. The results were positive, with residents reporting fewer wildlife interactions. The pilot project was approved for Saprae Creek Estates with the intention of rolling the program out to other areas if successful.
High wildlife interactions
The community was chosen for the pilot due to the high number of wildlife interactions experienced by residents. Almost 300 bear-resistant curbside collection bins will replace the current collection bins in Saprae Creek.
“We live in bear country and that means we will experience interactions with bears and other wildlife; this pilot project is intended to help reduce the number of these interactions,” said Antoine Rempp, Director of Environmental Services.
Pilot project
A survey will be open until December to allow Saprae Creek residents to share their thoughts and opinions about the new bear bins. This information will help inform the future of this project.

Be BearSmart
Bear resistant curbside collection bins are just one way to reduce wildlife interactions. Be BearSmart at home by removing food sources such as collecting fruit from gardens quickly, cleaning the barbeque after use and not putting out birdfeeders in the summer.
