Municipal drones are now regularly being used to assist Bylaw officers in tracking, pursuing, and laying charges for illegal OHV use.
Bylaw Services are now using drones to help enforce off-highway vehicle (OHV) laws. This has improved their ability to safely pursue riders illegally operating an OHV within Fort McMurray and lay charges. OHV laws are in place for the safety of everyone and the use of drones will help improve compliance with laws and enhance community safety.
On July 2, with the help of drones, Peace Officers were successful at intercepting an individual riding a dirt bike illegally on the green space behind Harpe Way, Morgan Heights and Walnut Crescent. Charges have been laid for the following offences under the Traffic Safety Act:
- Failing to stop for a Peace Officer
- Failing to have valid insurance
This is just one example of Bylaw's drone enforcement approach for illegal OHV use. Bylaw will continue to use drones as part of its ongoing efforts to curtail illegal use and to educate the public on the responsible operation of OHVs.
Report Illegal OHV use
Illegal or dangerous riding hurts the reputation of the entire OHV community. If you see illegal or unsafe OHV use, make note of the licence plate, address, or nearby location and report it. All reports are kept on file and officers will investigate.
Report illegal OHV use to 310-RCMP or Pulse at 780-743-7000.
OHV reminders
Remember that it is illegal to use quads, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and all OHVs anywhere within the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area, except for Municipal roads in Abasand. OHV trails are located on provincial land, with access available at one of the numerous staging areas.
Every OHV rider, whether on Municipal roads in Abasand or outside of Fort McMurray, must:
- Have valid insurance and registration, including a visible license plate.
- Have working headlights and taillights.
- Have a proper muffler and spark arrestor.
- Wear a CSA approved helmet.
- Not be impaired.
- Check for OHV restrictions and fire bans before you ride.
