Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. July 1. Landfill is now closed on statutory holidays and more important updates
The sun is out and the Canada Day long weekend is right around the corner! Here are some important updates and service reminders to help everyone plan ahead and enjoy the holiday weekend with neighbours, friends and family.
Canada Day celebrations
Start your Canada Day celebrations early – MacDonald Island Park is hosting a free community concert and fireworks on June 30!
Check out the iconic Canadian rock band 54-40 at the SMS Equipment Stadium at Shell Place from 6 to 11 p.m., followed by the Syncrude Fireworks at 11 p.m. Learn more at macdonaldisland.ca.
The Canada Day Parade on July 1 starts at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Main St. and Franklin Ave. After heading south on Franklin Ave., the parade will end at the corner of Riedel St. and Clearwater Dr. Drivers travelling downtown should expect delays and plan ahead.

Landfill and municipal offices closed on statutory holidays
The regional landfill in Fort McMurray is now closed on statutory holidays, including July 1 for Canada Day. This change was made as part of the shared plan with CUPE 1505 to deliver services more efficiently.
Municipal offices will be closed on July 1, including the cashiers and permitting office at the Jubilee building.
Fireworks are prohibited
The Fireworks Bylaw prohibits the use of fireworks in the Municipality without a permit. Fireworks can cause damaging fires and there are serious fines and penalties for setting them off. Please follow the rules and be safe over the long weekend.
Outdoor recreation spaces ready for summer fun
Enjoy the long weekend at one of the many parks and recreation spaces in the region. Splish splash at a spray park, explore the Birchwood Trails or slide through the weekend at a neighbourhood playground. Find up-to-date information on all parks and amenities at rmwb.ca/parks
Transit updates
On Canada Day, RMWB Transit routes 11, 12, 15, 16 and 99 will be available and operating on the statutory holiday schedule. There will be minor detours in place to accommodate the parade.
Rural transit will be running as usual.
Construction updates
Construction season is well underway with lots of work happening across the region. There are two temporary road closures expected to start in the coming days.
- Beginning June 29, a large section of Silin Forest Road in Thickwood will be temporarily closed as construction work progresses on Phase 2 – Silin Forest Road Deep Utilities Upgrades.
- Beginning July 2, Morrison Street from Biggs Ave. to MacDonald Ave. will be temporarily closed as work continues on the Saunderson Pressure Reducing Station.

Abasand OHV Pilot Project starts July 1
OHVs will be allowed on Municipal roads in Abasand beginning July 1. OHVs must travel the shortest route to and from homes to the designated staging area or gas station.
Before driving on Municipal roads, all OHV riders should review the rules and regulations at rmwb.ca/ohv
Special Council meeting July 3
There will be a special Council meeting on July 3 at 6 p.m. Council will debate the reconsideration motion presented by Councillor Banjoko. If reconsideration passes, then the motion to change Councillor positions to full-time will be debated again.
Anyone wishing to participate in this meeting may do so by Requesting to Speak at a Council Meeting, or by emailing Legislative.Assistants@rmwb.ca. Requests must be submitted by noon on July 3.
