Celebrate Indigenous history and culture in Wood Buffalo

Save the date for It’s Time to Read and Burgers and Bannock at the Island 

Join us for a month-long celebration of Indigenous culture and history in recognition of National Indigenous History Month (NIHM).  

Take part in upcoming events that reflect the stories and achievements of Indigenous Peoples across the region and Canada.  

Join us for Burgers and Bannock at the Island  

Please join us for a community gathering to celebrate and commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day at Shell Place on Saturday, June 21.  

The event is expected to run from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature family-friendly activities, light entertainment and lunch. 

It’s Time to Read events: Sweet Summer Pow Wow and Inkonze

Watch Sweet Summer Pow Wow starring Tatyana Rose Baptiste  

Head to the movie theatre for a free evening showing of Sweet Summer Pow Wow, featuring Indigenous actor and hometown star Tatyana Baptiste.  

Date: June 25  

Time: 5:45 – 9:30 p.m. (film starts at 6:30 p.m.) 

Location: Landmark Cinemas Movie Theatre, Eagle Ridge  

The film tells the story of how a young Indigenous couple get a break from their troubled lives when they find each other through a summer of love on the Pow Wow circuit.  

Attendees can take photos with Baptiste before the screening starts and participate in a Q & A panel after the film.  Seating is first-come first-served, and no registration is required.   

Join a lunchtime reading of Inkonze by Lorraine Hoffman 

Join us at Borealis Park for a lunchtime reading of Inkonze: The Stones of Traditional Knowledge by Lorraine Hoffman, a proud member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.  

Date: June 26, 2025  

Time: 11:50 a.m. – 1 p.m. (Lunch pick-up at 11:50 a.m., reading starts at noon)   

Location: Borealis Park – Bob Lamb Bandstand  

Inkonze is a published ethnography reflecting over 10,000 years of Indigenous presence, oral history, and traditional knowledge from the region.   

A light picnic lunch (free) will be served before the reading for the first 100 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is required.
