Shovels were in the ground on July 5 to mark the start of construction for the new Fort McKay Community Centre. The Centre is located on Range Road 1109, behind the firehall that officially opened in June, 2022.
The Community Centre will be a state-of -the- art venue able to host multiple functions, including festivals, youth and elder events, conferences and community gatherings. It will also be a central location to bring people together to learn and share the rich cultural history of Fort McKay. It is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2025.
Representatives from the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo including Councillors Loretta Waquan, Kendrick Cardinal and Lance Bussieres joined members of the Fort McKay First Nation and the Fort McKay Métis Nation at the Community Centre site to officially launch the construction of the community centre. Councillor Cardinal provided remarks on behalf of the RMWB.
