(Fort McMurray, AB – June 23, 2022) A Council tour of Janvier and Conklin will conclude with a Special Council Meeting on Monday, June 27. It will mark the first time since 2019 that an official Council meeting has been held outside Fort McMurray.
Council will begin the day in Janvier with a Community Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Tours of community facilities, including the fire hall, school, and the water treatment plant are planned.
Council will then move on to Conklin where facility tours will be followed by a community meal and meet & greet at the Conklin Multiplex at 2 p.m.
The Special Council Meeting begins at 3 p.m. at the Multiplex.
The meeting will include a public hearing on Bylaw No. 22/008 – Amendment to Conklin Area Structure Plan No 13/024, which would reduce the minimum lot size requirement on five land parcels and allow the Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee to subdivide the parcels.
Council Tour highlights
The meeting marks the conclusion of a series of Council tours of some rural communities, highlights of which included an Indigenous Flag Raising in Fort Chipewyan and the official opening of the Fort McKay Fire Hall.
A regular Council tradition, regional tours had been interrupted for the past few years by the pandemic.
“It’s really important to do things like this as a Council, and I am very appreciative of the amazing hospitality we received in all the rural communities we visited,” said Mayor Sandy Bowman. “Building even better relationships and friendships while seeking to learn and understand from each other is the best way to work together. We look forward to furthering these conversations in the weeks ahead.”
