Regional Emergency Services (RES) will begin controlled burns this week as part of the Municipality’s wildfire mitigation strategy.
Controlled burns are led by trained staff from RES and only happen when conditions are safe to do so. During these burns, smoke and controlled fire may be visible, which is normal, and not a cause for concern.
Controlled burns reduce wildfire risk
Controlled burns are carried out each spring to remove dead and dry surface fuels that collect over the winter months. It is an important step in helping to reduce wildfire risk in the region.
Priority areas for 2024
Controlled burns are planned in these priority areas:
- Thickwood
- Wood Buffalo
- Parsons Creek (North Access)
If time and conditions allow, controlled burns may be conducted in other areas within Fort McMurray. Follow the municipality’s social media channels @rmwoodbuffalo for updates.
Signs will be placed in nearby areas to remind residents of planned burns. Anyone living near controlled burning activity should keep their windows closed to keep smoke out of their homes.
Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Pulse online or call 780-743-7000.
