Council approves $5.3 million in funding for local non-profits to support homelessness initiatives

The Centre of Hope, Salvation Army, Wood Buffalo Wellness Society and YMCA of Northern Alberta will receive funding for housing programs

At the February 28, 2023 Council meeting, Council voted to allocate $5,267,728 to local non-profits under the 2023-2024 Community Plan on Homelessness Grant. The RMWB receives the funding from the federal and provincial governments to support homelessness initiatives in the region.

Grant breakdown

The Centre of Hope Non-Profit Society of Fort McMurray, The Governing Council of the Salvation Army in Canada, Wood Buffalo Wellness Society and the YMCA of Northern Alberta, Wood Buffalo Region applied for a total of eleven different programs, requesting $5.3 million in funding for programs that support individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.

Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee (HISC)

The Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee (HISC), comprised of representatives from Indigenous communities, United Way, Wood Buffalo Housing, Alberta Health Services, etc., reviewed the grant applications to ensure alignment with identified priorities and funding criteria, and then made recommendations to Council. HISC is an action-focused group that stewards and advocates for the community plan on homelessness.
