
(Fort McMurray, AB – March 21, 2022) – Due to increasingly warmer weather, the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is closing for the season on Tuesday March 22 at 10 a.m.
Road conditions have deteriorated significantly because of the warmer weather.
It is extremely dangerous to use the winter road when it’s closed
Travelling on the winter road when it is closed is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous. Barricades and signage will be in place and there is no detour. Any motorist using the winter road while it’s closed are putting themselves and others at risk of a serious incident.

Conditions can change quickly, always check before starting your journey by calling the hotline or checking the website for up to date information about road conditions and status before traveling. Anyone planning on using the winter road should review the Winter Road Safety Tips brochure.
Crews preparing updated route for 2022-23 season
Next winter, the Municipality is planning on moving the east ice crossing over the Des Roches River further south to avoid the Kazan Wildland Park. Crews are currently building and maintaining an ice crossing at the proposed location to monitor the ice integrity in the area and provide access to equipment preparing the new route.
