Starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 the vehicle load limits for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and the La Loche Winter Trail will be increasing to their maximum allowed weights.
- The load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is increasing to 45,000 kg.
- The load limit for the La Loche Winter Trail is increasing to 27,500 kg.
These are the maximum weight limits. There will be no further increases. Drivers not following limits can cause serious safety hazards and can damage winter roads and trails. There are serious penalties for violations.
All updates and changes to the load limits for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and La Loche Winter Trail will be formally announced. Drivers are reminded to obey all detour signs and not to enter closed-off routes.
All drivers are asked to drive slowly to match conditions and should be aware that there will be large trucks using the road.
Important reminders:
- Stay on the right-hand side of the road, especially on hills
- Stop at river crossings – only one vehicle can cross at a time
- Be cautious, and always be aware of crews and equipment working on the road
- All heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
- Review the Winter Road Safety Tips before travelling.
Speeding on the winter road is dangerous and destructive
Speeding is extremely dangerous, especially through the delta section of the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road route. Fast moving vehicles can build a wave under the ice that can easily damage the road and break ice suddenly when the wave strikes the shoreline, a sandbar or collides with a wave from a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
