Remember to plan ahead, drive to conditions and follow all posted signage.
Effective Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is increasing to 15,000 kg.
Vehicles heavier than 15,000 kg must stay off the winter road until load limits are increased. Heavier vehicles could damage the road, causing serious safety hazards and delays in reaching higher load limits.
Road users should be aware that the load limit increase means there will be large fuel trucks using the road.
Crews continue to work on the winter road and load limits are expected to increase as ice thickens.
All changes to the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be formally announced.
Be prepared for steep ramps at river ice crossings
Drivers should expect steep ramps at the river ice crossings, as crews are unable to create gentler ramps until ice levels increase.
La Loche Winter Trail remains closed
The winter trail remains closed while crews work to build the trail to safely carry traffic.
Slow down! Winter road safety tips
- Stay on the right-hand side of the road, especially on hills.
- All heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Please submit a permit application as soon as possible to prevent any delays. Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
- Review the Winter Road Safety Tips before travelling.
Drivers are reminded to be cautious, as posted signage may not be in place for every hazard along the route, and to always be aware of crews and equipment working on the road.
