Drive to conditions, plan ahead and follow all posted signage
Starting Sunday, March 9, the daytime load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will return to 45,000 kg.
The cold weather in the forecast has allowed the daytime load limit to increase, but conditions can change quickly this late in the season and anyone travelling on the winter road should check the current status before departing.
All updates and changes to the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be formally announced.
Heavy vehicles should use winter road as soon as possible
Any heavy vehicle that needs to travel on the winter road is strongly encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
All heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
Important reminders
- Follow all posted signage and do not speed
- Be cautious, and always be aware of crews and equipment working on the road
- Stay on the right-hand side of the road, especially on hills
- Stop at river crossings – only one vehicle can cross at a time
- Review the Winter Road Safety Tips before travelling.
Speeding on the winter road is very dangerous and destructive
Drivers should plan ahead and take extra time while traveling on the winter road. With temperatures fluctuating, road conditions can change quickly and often.
Speeding on the winter road is extremely dangerous, especially through the delta section of the route. Fast moving vehicles can build a wave under the ice that can easily damage the road and break ice suddenly when the wave strikes the shoreline, a sandbar or collides with a wave from a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
