Crews completed a successful season on Monday with the official closure of the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road, after implementing several safety improvements this year.
The road remained open for 105 consecutive days this season, one week longer than the 10-year average.
Season highlights and improvements:
- Improved signage and line-of-sight on heavy haul bypass route north of the Firebag River.
- Cleared brush at traffic intersection near heavy haul route to give better line of sight.
- Increased patrols by Bylaw officers.
- Established a local advisory group to give feedback on winter road construction and maintenance priorities. Meetings will take place over the summer months.
- Added additional stop signs, including larger sign at northern winter road entrance.
- Installed flashing light signage to alert motorists, at community’s request.
- Installed large warning sign for southbound traffic ahead of blind corner at Grayling Creek.
Heavy vehicle driver education a goal for next season
Educating heavy vehicle drivers on permitting and compliance with weight restrictions will be a focus of the 2025-26 winter road season.
All heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Find more information on permits and other details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
Rural operations team and motorists played key roles
The successes of this season are due to the efforts of winter road crews and rural operations staff, who kept the road well-maintained and addressed safety concerns.
Residents also played a key role in improving safety on the winter road by obeying posted signage and being cautious at river crossings and when facing oncoming traffic.
