The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is an intervenor in a number of recent Designated Industrial Property (DIP) assessment appeals involving major oil sands producers in the region. There is currently a hearing underway involving Fort Hills (operated by Suncor).
DIP Assessments directly affect the tax revenue payable to the RMWB. Not unlike how residential property taxes are calculated based on property assessment values, Industrial properties, such as Fort Hills also pay taxes based on assessed values. These values for industrial properties are set by the Provincial Assessor. In the case of oil sands producers, the assessments involve billions of dollars in assets, potentially affecting millions of dollars in tax revenues.
The Fort Hills Hearing before the Alberta Provincial Land and Property Rights Tribunal (LPRT) began on July 17, 2023 and is scheduled to continue through to at least August 25, 2023. The RMWB is providing access to the virtual broadcast of this hearing in Suite 208 at Shell Place for anyone interested in viewing. Please note this is not an interactive online meeting.
If you are interested in monitoring the LPRT proceedings, please contact the Legal Services department with the RMWB: legalservices.newrequests@rmwb.ca to confirm your interest OR simply attend and register at Suite 208 at Shell Place (see the below direction information). This room will be available to virtually monitor the live hearing between July 19 and July 28 and, subject to public interest, for the entire proceedings.
