What is household hazardous waste?
Household hazardous waste are products with chemicals that are harmful to the environment if they are not disposed of properly. Common types of household hazardous waste include:
- Cleaning products
- Gardening and pest control products
- Beauty products (hairspray, nail polish, etc.)
- Paint
- Automotive products (oil, anti-freeze, gas, etc.)
- Batteries
What is electronic waste?
Electronic waste contains heavy metals that are harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. Common types of household electronic waste are:
- Cell phones, tablets and other wireless devices
- Computers, laptops and chargers
- Wireless headphones, earbuds and portable speakers
- Vape pens and e-cigarettes
- Small home appliances
- Power tools
- Audio and video equipment
- Gaming devices
- Electronic toys
- Musical greeting cards
Never put electronics and hazardous waste in curbside collection bins
Most electronics contain a lithium-ion battery that can expand, ignite and explode during waste processing. This creates a very serious fire risk at waste facilities, which puts workers at significant risk.
Disposing of household hazardous waste improperly also creates a very serious safety risk for workers as they can be exposed to harmful chemicals.
It doesn’t matter how small an electronic is or how little is left of a product, disposing these items improperly creates serious safety risks.
Drop-off old electronics and household hazardous waste for free at the landfill
Electronic and household hazardous waste can be taken to the landfill for disposal, year-round and free of charge. The landfill is open from 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., seven days a week and closed on statutory holidays.
