(Fort McMurray, AB – May 18, 2023) – Mayor Sandy Bowman officially presented Mr. Guy Choquet with the Key to the Region on Wednesday night.
The Key to the Region is an award that recognizes an individual, group of individuals, or organization that has enhanced the Municipality, the Province of Alberta, or Canada.
Mayor Bowman made the presentation at a retirement gathering held at the Golden Years Society in Choquet’s honour, attended by his colleagues, friends and supporters.
“The Key to the Region is given to those for which we have tremendous gratitude for their exceptional service, and it demonstrates our respect for what they’ve done,” said Mayor Bowman. “Guy is such a special part of our community, and his leadership and compassion was deeply meaningful, coming at some of our most challenging times.”
Choquet retires following an over 40-year career at the Canadian Red Cross, where he was most recently the Director of Fire Recovery in Fort McMurray (Wood Buffalo), a role that extended to supporting community response and recovery from the 2020 flood and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I am truly honoured and humbled to receive this recognition, and I accept it on behalf of everyone that worked tirelessly to help everyone in need as the community navigated these successive challenges,” said Choquet. “There is something truly special about this region and the people that live here, and it’s one of the reasons I am retiring right here – because it has become my home.”
