Mayor Sandy Bowman has issued the following statement on the passing of Councillor Jane Stroud:
“It is with very heavy hearts and profound sadness that we mourn the sudden and unexpected passing of Councillor Jane Stroud.
“Our deepest sympathies and condolences are expressed to Gordon, Kimberley and all of Councillor Stroud’s family, loved ones, friends, and all those that cared about her and loved her.
“Jane will be missed by many, and our thoughts and hearts are with everyone that is mourning her loss.
“We too, are mourning her loss. Councillor Stroud was a colleague, friend, community leader and long-time resident with deep ties to the region.
“Sometimes it is said that everyone is replaceable. I can say with certainty that when it comes to serving her community, Jane cannot be replaced. We can only honour her contributions and what she meant to many people.
“Those that knew Councillor Stroud knew her to be kind, compassionate and understanding, but she was also a tireless and fierce advocate for the communities she served.
“Jane also spoke truth to power when she felt it was necessary, and she always stood up publicly, and privately, for what she believed was the right thing to do.
“A proud Anzac resident, Councillor Stroud was first elected in 2010 and had a remarkable impact on the communities she served on Council – Anzac, Conklin, Gregoire Lake Estates and Janvier.
“The causes, projects and programs she championed are too lengthy to mention today, and that speaks volumes about how Jane worked with her Council colleagues and community members over the years to leave behind a better place than the one she had found.
“That impact also extends to all rural and Indigenous communities of the region, as well as to Fort McMurray.
“As someone with a profound connection to the people, heritage and communities here, Jane always seemed to understand that we were better together, rather than focusing on what set us apart.
“We will miss you, Councillor Stroud, and we’ll always remember what you did for the people of this region. May you rest in peace.
“In honour and in memory of Councillor Jane Stroud, all municipal flags will fly at half-mast.”
