The Municipality is launching a new transit safety campaign to improve understanding of acceptable behaviour on buses and at stops.
“Everyone is welcome on public transit, and everyone deserves to feel safe and respected when riding the bus or waiting at their stop,” said Joel Trudell, Senior Manager of Transportation & Facilities. “The focus of this campaign is to show everyone how to ride the right way, highlighting what we can all do to keep passengers, transit staff and our neighbours feeling safe and respected.”
The safety campaign is launched with recognition of the work done by CUPE 1505 and their support for transit employees, as well as their commitment to safety.
“Transit staff provide a very important public service to the community they call home; they keep it moving,” said Craig Milley, CUPE 1505 President. “It’s important that everyone who uses Transit treats operators and staff with respect and appreciation – it makes a big difference.”
Know the code: ride the right way on public transit
The Transit Code is a simplified version of the Transit Bylaw – which will make it easier for riders to understand and follow. The Transit Code includes eight key principles that are built around common sense and courtesy.
- Treat others as you would like to be treated.
- Be respectful and courteous.
- Be safe.
- Speak calmly and kindly.
- Respect personal space and privacy.
- Do not litter or damage property.
- Respect the rights and identities of all.
- Be mindful of the mobility needs of others.
The full version of the updated Transit Code includes guidelines on seat etiquette, courtesy for passengers and staff, prohibited behaviour and reporting unsafe behaviour and incidents. Learn more at rmwb.ca/transitsafety.
See something? Say something!
Anyone who sees harmful behaviour on the bus or near a shelter is asked to report the incident to their driver or nearby security personnel. They can also call Pulse at 780-743-7000 to give the date, time, route number and other details of the incident.
For emergencies, passengers should always call 9-1-1.
