Work is underway to improve the OHV experience for riders and residents. At Tuesday’s meeting, Council supported the implementation of two new initiatives: an updated Bylaw Services OHV Compliance Strategy and the creation of an inter-departmental OHV Working Group.
The operation of an OHV on municipal roads, greenbelts and trails in the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area, remains illegal.
Inter-departmental OHV Working Group
The working group will consist of various municipal department representatives with a mandate to:
- review and bring forward an updated Off-Highway Vehicle Bylaw for the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area.
- encourage local OHV users to establish a local riders association. This association will work alongside the Municipality to explore options for community-led initiatives that may increase opportunities for responsible OHV use in the region; and identify and map public lands in the region where OHVs may be operated legally.
Off-Highway Vehicle Compliance Strategy-Fort McMurray Urban Service Area
Since 2022, there have been 113 instances of OHV riders in direct violation of the Urban Service Area OHV Bylaw. The new Compliance Strategy has three key objectives:
- Enhance public awareness of the rules governing OHV use.
- Provide consistency and clarity in response to non-compliance.
- Increase enforcement and levels of voluntary compliance, particularly in residential neighborhoods and areas with high pedestrian traffic.
Reminders for responsible OHV use
- Have insurance and registration for your OHV and any operators
- Drive responsibly in OHV designated areas
- Safety first: ensure all users have helmets and any other required personal protective equipment.
- The Municipality maintains several staging areas to facilitate and promote safe and legal OHV use by residents. To learn more visit rmwb.ca/ohv
