At the annual Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI) conference, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo received a 2023 Award of Merit for the Downtown Revitalization Incentives Program.
“We’re incredibly proud of this achievement and the impact the program is having on revitalizing downtown,” said Amanda Haitas, acting Director of Planning and Development. “I’d like to thank Municipal staff for all their work and the local businesses who are participating in this program and investing their own time and money to create a more vibrant downtown.”
APPI 2023 awards
APPI’s awards celebrate and recognize exemplary work in the planning profession. Plans and projects that have significantly contributed to the livability of communities in Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut are considered.
Team success for award-winning program
The team responsible for the Downtown Revitalization Incentives Program, received their award in the Implementation Success category, at the ceremony in Jasper on October 16, which forms part of the APPI annual conference.
Downtown Revitalization Incentives Program
The program began in 2020 and offers grants for businesses and organizations to improve and upgrade eligible downtown properties. These grants encourage investment that might not otherwise happen, helping create a vibrant, attractive downtown core where people want to spend time.
At this time, applications for the program remain closed while a comprehensive review is completed. Phase three of the program is being considered for spring 2024, pending the outcome of the review.
