No access to Snye Point or the parking lot during annual removal of river silt
(Fort McMurray, AB – Aug. 11, 2023) – Crews are expected to begin dredging the Snye on Aug. 14 to keep the channel clear for boats and watercrafts.
The mouth of the Snye fills with sediment deposits (silt) brought by the current of the Clearwater River. Each year, this silt is dredged (removed) from the river to maintain an access channel. This year's dredging operation is expected to be completed by mid-September.
Excavators will be removing the sediment and placing it on Snye Point to allow it to dry before hauling it away. The physical dredging and removal of silt deposits from the water is expected to take up to two weeks. The mud and silt must then be de-watered on land before being hauled away.
Snye Point temporarily closed
There will be no access to Snye Point for the duration of the operation. The parking lot next to the Snye Point will also have limited or no access to parking until the project is complete.
There will be limited water access for small boats between the Snye and Clearwater River during dredging. Please follow all instructions from crews and signage in place.
