STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
(Fort McMurray, AB – September 8, 2022) – Mayor Sandy Bowman issued this statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II:
“Alongside people across the region, I am saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96. My deepest and profound condolences go to the entire Royal Family, while my thoughts are with all people of the United Kingdom and the broader Commonwealth, of which our region, Alberta and Canada are a part.
“As the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, The Queen leaves a historic, unprecedented, and indelible legacy on the British monarchy, the entire Commonwealth and broader society. Her Majesty acceded to the Throne in 1952 and was the longest-serving head of state in the world, including for Canada. The reality is The Queen is the only British monarch and Head of the Commonwealth many of us have ever known.
“In accordance with appropriate protocols and out of respect for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, all flags at municipal buildings in the region will be flown at half-mast during this period of reflection and mourning.”
