Stay off storm ponds; use designated outdoor rinks
(Fort McMurray, AB – December 18, 2023) – With unseasonably warm temperatures and minimal snow so far this winter, Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz is urging people to think twice before venturing out on ice.
Thin ice on rivers
“When rivers freeze, it may look thick enough to walk or even drive on but may not be safe,” says Chief Butz. “There may be patches of thin ice you can’t see as currents continue to run under the surface.”
Keep off storm ponds
Storm ponds have constantly flowing water, which can make ice thickness unreliable.
Skating and hockey are a great part of winter. Please use designated outdoor rinks that are maintained to ensure safety. Don’t skate or play hockey on storm ponds or other unsafe water bodies.

Tips to stay safe:
- Take care around riverbanks and water body edges.
- Stay off ice-covered storm ponds. The thickness of the ice and its ability to hold the weight of a person is very difficult to assess.
If you see someone fall through the ice, call 911 immediately.
